Before the war

I went to Kuwait in 1986 for the refurbishment of the Messila Beach Hotel, which is situated a few miles south of Kuwait City on the coast of the Arabian Gulf. My first visit was in the winter, and having been to the Emirates in the south of the Gulf in the winter time, was expecting the weather to be the same, up in the 80's, but it was cold. All I had to wear were three or four layers of t-shirts, but we managed, after all we're English.
When I was there it was the Muslim Ramadan festival, you're supposed to respect their beliefs (fair enough, but that doesn't apply if you're a Muslim in England!) , you're not supposed to eat between sunrise and sunset, unless you're a traveller or pregnant, but not knowing this, it was a bit strange being looked at as I walked up the street eating an icecream.
