Kish is an island 12 miles long by 6 miles across, it's situated about 12 miles off the southern coast of Iran. It was the result of a volcanic eruption and the lava can still be seen around the coast. Because of it's situation, in the narrowest part of the Gulf, in the Straits of Hormuz, in the olden days it was inhabited by pirates who plied their trade from the island.
I was booked to fly out from Stanstead on the Thursday but had a call to say that the plane had broken down, same thing Friday. I eventually reached Stanstead Saturday evening, same problem, a broken plane! Can we go back home and come back Sunday? No! Put us in a hotel Saturday night. We stopped near Stansted on the Saturday night, had a few pints.
We discovered the following day that one of the aircraft belonging to Trans Meridian Air Cargo, who we were flying with, had just crashed in Hong Kong harbour, nice one!
We eventually took off Sunday evening enroute to the Gulf..........
